A SHORT HISTORY OF FRESHWATER

Freshwater is home to one of the oldest buildings on the Isle of Wight, All Saints' Church, mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086. The village grew in popularity as a resort from Victorian times and is famous for its association with the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who lived there for many years. Today, hikers can enjoy stunning scenery along the Tennyson Down trail, which leads to the monument erected in his memory at the top of the Needles Headland.
