GETTING AROUND IN NEWPORT

Newport's central location on the island allows for easy travel in all directions, including north to Cowes. Just a short drive north along the B3325, it offers links to the mainland via a regular ferry to Southampton. Newport bus depot also provides services to nearby towns and villages, including Ryde, Fishbourne and Osborne House.

A SHORT HISTORY OF NEWPORT

One of Newport’s most famous historic attractions is its Roman villa, a farmhouse dating back to 280AD. Another is the Castle Inn, first licensed in 1550 and the Isle of Wight’s oldest pub. It boasts a fascinating royal connection – local legend has it that King Charles I had a secret passageway between the pub and nearby Carisbrook Castle, where he was held prisoner for just over a year.
