Sandown is situated on the Isle of Wight’s only railway line, with regular services connecting it to nearby Ryde, Shanklin, Brading and Lake stations. It’s also linked by road to Ryde and Fishbourne on the north coast, where frequent ferries depart for Portsmouth. Regular buses travel from Sandown to Newport and other destinations in the heart of the island.
Sandown first rose to prominence as an important military base, with its sheltered coastal location provided an ideal landing spot for invading troops. Henry VIII built a castle at Sandown to guard against potential French and Spanish invasions. It no longer stands today, but you can see several other fortresses and military barricades dotted along the coastline.

Sandown boasts some beautiful scenic walks, including the walk to Shanklin, which takes you along the Isle of Wight Coastal Path. When it comes to sport, Shanklin & Sandown Golf Club is considered one of the best on the island, and the town also has its own cricket, rugby and bowling clubs. Fitness fans will find plenty of facilities on offer at the Heights Leisure Centre, which boasts two well-equipped gyms, two pools and an abundance of classes.
The town might be best known for its beautiful beach and coastal scenery, but property in Sandown also benefits from fantastic local places to eat and drink. Local favourites include The Reef Restaurant and Bar, as well as Driftwood Beach Bar and The Bandstand, which boasts stunning sea views from every table. For drinks, head to The Caulkheads beer garden on a summer evening or Scruffy Jacks on the pier to enjoy sporting highlights on the big screen.
